Electric excavator new edition 2024 review

Proven reliability meets performance

In cooperation with customers and Huppenkothen GmbH, we made the decision to launch a new limited series in 2023 in order to further optimise the proven machines for subsequent series. The existing electric excavators have now been in use for 7 years.

Beautiful inside and out

A sleek redesign of the excavator not only gives the machines a fresh, modern look, but also improves functionality and comfort. For example, the driver's view to the rear from the cab has been optimised by lowering the entire container by around 350 mm towards the top. The design was developed in collaboration with the design studio Kaliauer Industrie Design from Linz, which already has experience in designing construction and special vehicles.

Refined charging technology

The previous electric excavators could charge using alternating current (AC) with 22kW or optionally 44kW. With the redesign, we have also implemented the option of DC charging, with which the batteries can be charged from 20 to 80 % in 50 minutes with up to 100 kW. The battery temperature can also be heated or cooled by the system if conditions are not ideal. Cable operation has also been implemented to enable unlimited power for stationary applications.

Innovation and continuity combined

Remote System: We install our INSIGHT remote system as standard on all machines that we develop. This allows the operating data and live status of the e-excavators to be checked efficiently and intuitively. The map view also provides an overview of the current locations.
Excavator assistance systems: A retrofit of the MOVASYST excavator assistance system was taken into account, for example by providing separate power supplies and a 12 V connection to the front of the boom.
High Voltage Distribution Unit: With our FUSION450S, we connect the main components battery, charger, inverter, motor and the fast charging system in the electric excavator. All inputs and outputs are also fused on both sides (positive and negative pole).
DC-Fast Charging Interface: With our INTERFLOW500, we enable fast charging of the high-voltage batteries in the electric excavator in accordance with the CCS standard via a communication unit, current measurement and contactors.
Batterien: The batteries used are a consistent further development of the previous model. In addition to the increased capacity of 126 kWh, a system was developed over a 3-year development period that leads the field in terms of safety, robustness and performance.
LVDU: The low-voltage distribution system has been completely redesigned. Here, too, we have taken into account the experience of our service department and INSIGHT and used proven, high-performance components in the design.
Heat pump: The heat pumps remain fundamentally similar to the pre-series - what is unique about this edition of the electric excavator, however, is that the heat pumps work bidirectionally. This means that they can move heat back and forth from the batteries, electronics and cab as required, thus ensuring optimum operating conditions for the technology and user comfort on the one hand and maximising efficiency on the other.
Engine: No significant changes have been made to the engine, the maximum drive power of 94 kW remains the same.

Safe & user-centred

Safety and comfort are paramount for SUNCAR. The machines have safety certificates, a Marechal plug (enables automatic unlocking in the event of mechanical overload on the cable) and warnings for safe operation.
Our machines are also designed with the operator in mind so that work can be carried out more comfortably and efficiently. For example, an optional high-voltage heater that can heat the cab more quickly is now installed.

Assembly

The development phase of the machines was completed at the end of 2023, and the assembly phase began in January - this included setting up the containers at our site in Schlieren and then connecting the containers to the machines in Oberbüren near Huppenkothen. Commissioning took place at the beginning of March.

EMC Tests

After assembly, the electric excavators were subjected to a comprehensive EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) test. The successful completion of these tests not only confirmed the high quality of our excavators, but also our commitment to prioritising safety and compliance. Compliance with EMC regulations is crucial to ensure the reliability of electronic systems and avoid possible malfunctions.

Noise measurements

In a final step, the noise measurements for the electric excavator were successfully completed in accordance with the Outdoor Noise Directive. The exact result has yet to be calculated, but according to initial rough calculations, the A-weighted sound pressure level is 90 dB. In comparison: the original machine has a value of 97 dB. A difference of 90 dB to 97 dB is clearly perceptible in the volume, as decibels are a logarithmic scale. This means that an increase of 10 dB is perceived as approximately twice as loud. A difference of 7 dB (i.e. from 90 dB to 97 dB) is therefore clearly audible, although not quite as strong as a doubling.

Here is a rough comparison:

  • 90 dB corresponds to the sound of a lawnmower or a noisy road, for example.
  • 97 dB is closer to the noise level of a jackhammer or a loud rock concert.

Project completion spring 2024

Our electric excavators are designed to tackle the toughest jobs with minimal emissions, without compromising on performance. With state-of-the-art technology and sophisticated engineering, the SUNCAR electric excavator is in no way inferior to the performance of conventional diesel machines on the market. The electrical advantages of the excavator are manifold: low maintenance, reduced operating costs and emission-free operation, especially on inner-city construction sites and in enclosed spaces.

The new edition of the electric excavator combines proven technology with innovative improvements in design, functionality and efficiency, so that it not only fulfills the current requirements of the construction industry, but also sets a future-oriented standard for sustainable and powerful machines.
